Information is the lifeblood of any organization. An establishment is as lively and healthy as the quality of its information system and how it is effectively and efficiently managed. We are living in a time of great change and working in an information age. Managers have to assimilate masses of data, convert the data into information, form conclusion about that information, and make decision leading to the achievement of business goals and objectives to ensure continuity. For an organization, information is as important as other resources like money, machinery and manpower which therefore calls for it proper management. This research work looks at the roles of management information system (MIS) in operation and performance of Nigerian banks. Four banks were selected (United Bank for Africa, First Bank of Nigeria, Skye Bank of Nigeria Plc and Union Bank of Nigeria Plc) for the purpose of the study on which the dynamics of MIS was examined so as to open the eyes of starters and practioners to simple but critical factors in MIS that can spell doom if adequate attention are not paid to them by the organization. Questionnaire was administered to the officials and staff of the selected banks to collect relevant and vital information for the purpose of achieving the stated objectives of this research work. Annual reports and financial statement of these banks for the period 2004-2008 was also used in computing some ratios all of which are vital performance indicators that informs stakeholders on the performance and operations of there firm on which decisions can be based.
